Furmint - Dereszla Winery
Dereszla Winery is located in Bodrogkeresztúr, in the heart of the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region of north-eastern Hungary. The estate cultivates forty hectares of its own vineyards and works with an additional hundred hectares under contract across twenty-five vineyards, several of which – Dereszla, Lapis, Henye, Hatalos, Zsadány, and Várhegy – are classified as first-class historic sites of the region. The diverse soils of these slopes define the complexity of Dereszla wines. Over one kilometre of cellars was historically carved into the volcanic rhyolite tuff of the Dereszla vineyard, providing excellent conditions for ageing aszú, szamorodni and sparkling wines. The Henye Winery, opened in 2015 and as part of the Dereszla Group, produces the estate’s dry wines and sparkling wines.
Category-winner wine: Furmint Selection 2022
This dry white wine is made entirely from hand-harvested and carefully selected furmint grapes. Hungarian new oak barrels were used for the fermentation, which was followed by six months of ageing on fine lees. Thanks to the volcanic soil and barrel maturation, this wine is distinguished by a rich flavour profile, a straw-yellow colour and subtle vanilla notes, while the fine structure and balanced acidity give it excellent ageing potential. It is recommended to be served at 12°C with pâté, mushrooms, smoked fish, seafood, or lamb.
