Bikavér - Vesztergombi Winery
The Vesztergombi family has been cultivating vines and making wine on the hills of Szekszárd since the 17th century, as demonstrated by bottles from the early 1700s bearing the family coat of arms. Ferenc Vesztergombi, named Hungary’s Winemaker of the Year in 1993, together with his son Csaba, continues this centuries-old tradition, managing one of the leading wineries of the region. On their 30-hectare estate, red grape varieties dominate, ranging from the light kadarka to the substantial, full-bodied cabernet. Harvested from the finest vineyards of the region and carefully matured at the family’s modern winery on Borkút Street, Vesztergombi wines preserve the typical Szekszárd character, while consistently meeting international standards and achieving outstanding results.
Category-winner wine: Szekszárdi Bikavér 2021
An elegant, balanced Szekszárd blend. Made in equal measure from cabernet sauvignon and merlot alongside kékfrankos and kadarka, it combines the modern with the traditional. It was matured for 24 months in large oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Its aromas include black cherry, blackcurrant, blueberry and sour cherry, complemented by anise, liquorice, black pepper, subtle herbal tones and fresh green spices. Medium-bodied, with a moderately long finish, it is enjoyable while young but will become more refined with age. An excellent match for Hungarian stews, game dishes and mature cheeses.
